Islam adalah agama yang ajaran-ajarannya diwahyukan oleh Allah SWT melalui utusannya, Nabi Muhammad SAW. Islam mencakup berbagai aspek kehidupan manusia yang bersumber dari al-Qur'an dan Hadis. Di Indonesia, pendidikan Islam sering dianggap sempit karena kesalahpahaman tentang hakikatnya. Kesalahpahaman ini terdapat baik di kalangan non-Muslim maupun Muslim. Reformasi pendidikan yang dipelopori oleh tokoh-tokoh seperti Haji Rasul, Abdullah Ahmad, dan K.H. Ahmad Dahlan mengadopsi pola pendidikan modern Muhammad Abduh di Mesir, yang berupaya mensintesiskan sistem pendidikan Islam tradisional dan Barat. Makalah ini membahas pemikiran pendidikan Harun Nasution, seorang cendekiawan Muslim terkemuka, yang pendekatan teologis dan filosofisnya yang rasional dan radikal telah memicu perdebatan. Kontribusinya dalam memodernisasi pendidikan Islam, khususnya di perguruan tinggi, sangat signifikan.
Islam is a religion whose teachings were revealed by Allah SWT through His messenger, Prophet Muhammad SAW. Islam encompasses various aspects of human life, sourced from the Qur'an and Hadith. In Indonesia, Islamic education is often perceived as narrow due to misconceptions about its essence. This misunderstanding exists not only among non-Muslims but also within the Muslim community itself. The educational reforms initiated by figures like Haji Rasul, Abdullah Ahmad, and K.H. Ahmad Dahlan adopted the modern educational patterns of Muhammad Abduh in Egypt, aiming to synthesize traditional Islamic and Western educational systems. The paper discusses the educational thoughts of Harun Nasution, a prominent Muslim scholar, whose rational and radical theological and philosophical approaches have sparked debates. His contributions to modernizing Islamic education, particularly in higher education, are significant.
